University Professor Fired For Dating Student

A Tokyo Gakugei University professor has been dismissed for dating a female student and sending e-mails inviting two other female students out on dates, the university announced Tuesday.

The university said the professor, a married man in his 60s, had been dating a student he taught in a seminar class from about June 2005.

The student was reportedly troubled about her relationship with the professor and attempted suicide on a number of occasions. She took absence last year from the university in Koganei, Tokyo, before dropping out in March.

The extent of her suffering became clear when she lodged a complaint with the university in January.

The professor reportedly also sent about 20 e-mails inviting two other female students out to dinner and for car rides.
